Not recommended. Cloud-based team messaging platform with channels, threads, and integrations. Free tier limits message history to 90 days and caps integrations at 10. Included here for comparison against Mattermost and Rocket.Chat, the two self-hosted alternatives we do recommend.
Usage Notes
Government enforcement ties: Slack's parent company, Salesforce, has held a contract with US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) since March 2018, used to help "manage border activities" during the "zero tolerance" family-separation policy. Over 650 Salesforce employees signed a letter demanding the company end the contract; CEO Marc Benioff refused, and Salesforce has maintained the relationship for years despite sustained pressure (see TechCrunch).
Guest access available on paid plans for external collaborators. Slack Connect allows cross-organization channels with other Slack workspaces.
